Day thirty-three was very warm. We left Paihia and Waitangi before celebrations began and drove to Opua where we caught the car ferry to Russell. This was another novel experience. Our five motorhomes were the only vehicles aboard. Everyone else wnted to go the other way. We landed and drove into Russell and spent several hours viewing the old buildings and the waterfront.
We then headed for the DOC camp at Whangaruru on the Whangaruru Harbour. The road was very windy and steep in part and we arrived there at lunch time. After lunch everyone threaded their rods and prepared to go fishing. By that time we were hot so we had a swim, followed by a cold shower. Lovely.
During the afternoon we did some fishing and later launch the kontiki. I caught three undersize snapper off the rocks, Gloria caught a herring and Bob, with the kontiki, caught a stingray and a gunard. After happy hour we had a shared BBQ tea using the meat from the raffle we won.
After tea we launched the kontiki for the second time but no luck. When we had finished it was past our bedtime so no time to do the blog.
